The Stage Side of the Big Cypress Coin has as its focal point the stage backdrop used at Big Cypress for the NYE set, complete with Father Time on his bike, clock pendulum, and onstage Port-a-Potty. The Hot Dog, Skywheel carnival ride, and Meatstick time capsule are depicted, and a swamp Airboat awaits the boys backstage. Fireworks ring in the new year, a news helicopter circles over the crowd, and the first sunrise of the new millenium peeks out from behind palm trees on the horizon.
The Everglades Side of the Big Cypress Coin brings to life the beauty of the Big Cypress Reservation, which is located in the heart of the Everglades. Inspired by a Seminole creation myth, I positioned a shell at the base of a Big Cypress Tree, and a few of the sacred animals that emerged from that shell nearby. The phrase “Che-Hun-Ta-Mo” is a Seminole expression meaning “Welcome to Big Cypress” and also is the title of a song played by Phish with alligator-wrestler/musician Seminole Chief Jim Billie.
